Sword & Shield Class

The sword and shield class was developed with children in mind, since the Adult sword class, Batto-do, requires students to be at least 14 years of age.  The sword and shield class instructs young students in the art of the Samurai sword in a fun and safe environment.

Students will learn the basics of drawing the sword, strikes, katas and sheathing the sword.  Students will utilize foam swords shaped as samurai swords to allow for realistic experience, while keeping it very safe for our young students.  Students will learn the traditional ways of the Japanese Samurai along with respect for ancient art of Bushido.
Another aspect of this class is the sword and shield, which helps the students learn how to utilize both of their hands and arms in self defense.  Students find this very fun, which helps them learn quickly, improve their coordination and balance.  This part of the class focuses on utilizing a shield to block strikes and perform sword strikes without leaving your body open to your opponent.  Basic blocks, strikes, spins, individual and group sparring are performed, which the students look forward to.  This is a class adults wish they had.
The Kodenkan of Tucson teaches a wide variety of traditional and modern martial arts styles including Karate, Jujitsu, Judo, Kung Fu, Batto-do (Japanese Sword), Hiraido (Mixed Martial Arts/MMA) and Lil’Dragons. With classes for children, teens, adults, and seniors, we have something for just about every member of the family!
