Karate

Karate is a martial art which traces its origins back to feudal Japan, offering its students powerful techniques based of the combat practice of the samurai. Karate training consists of drills, sparring (kumite), pre-arranged routines (kata) and self-defense drills.

Several styles of karate exist, each with their own philosophy and emphasis. The styles offered at the Kodenkan Martial Arts Academy are well-established and respected- Shorin Ryu karate from Japan, and Goju Ryu karate from Okinawa.

Karate, like many martial arts, is an excellent means of physical and mental training. For example, the practice of kata and its subtle movements develops balance and coordination. Kumite gives students the opportunity to practice their skills in a safe environment, improving their reflexes and ability to focus (kime).
